When installing a preformed niche, you want to figure out where your tile will lay out to before cutting, so that it will fall within the layout of the tile.

Once it's cut out, you want to go around all four sides and "rabbit" the edges to accept the flange of the niche, so as to have a nice flat transition from one surface to the other.

Also, you want to follow the grinder with a shop vac to catch the dust coming off the cement board as you grind, or you'll "cloud" yourself out in a hurry!

Once the cement board is ready to receive the niche, sqirt a liberal amount of caulking on the back edge of it to seal it to the cement board....

You can see where my level line for my tile is to the bottom right of the niche. The tile will fall full just a hair above the bottom of the niche, which can be filled in. Same with other 3 sides.
